Laptop pro:
1. portability ( if you’re using it in your school and if you’d like to be Cool… this is a good reason to buy one)

2. hmm…. i can’t think of another reason to buy one…

cons

1. it is very limited in terms of upgradability (in short it is easily outmoded… “disposable” is the term other people use).

2. not so durable (well unless you are buying the really hard core ones…)

3. sometimes it’s not so portable as most of the makers say it is.

4. the price…

5. it can easily be stolen from you… ( unless you have a car or a very secure environment in your school this remains to be an issue)

Desktop Pro.

1. well as we all know desktops are a lot more versatile and upgrade friendly.

2. it’s a hell lot cheaper than buying a laptop.

3. it is less prone to damage than laptops.

cons

1. well for one it is not as cool as having a laptop in school.

2. it does require a bit of space (this is an issue for the ones in dorms and condos…)

3. you can’t carry it around 

Advice on buying a tech gadget like a PC or laptop:

1. well if you are not really a tech geek, you’d have to atleast have some one to guide you some one who knows about the hardwares and all that…

2. NEVER trust the salesperson in the computer shop… the rule here is that the expensive ones are not always the best ones.

3. ask about the warranty of the parts and the procedures on replacement of parts. ask how long it would take to replace or repair and how long the product will be covered by the warranty also the terms and conditions.

4. buy a pc that you need and not the one you like. (don’t buy a ferrari if you are just going to use it to go to the mall… i think you get the point here)    

5. buy a PC or Laptop at a computer shop that is near to you. (it will be a very big discomfort if you’d buy one from a comp shop that is far from your place, especially if your PC breaks down…)

6. window shop for the PCs first you might see a better deal in other shops.

You can change the string to watever you want, ex. Microsoft to adobe, iso to zip etc…

Why do I need a firewall?

Well, you’ll need a firewall to protect you from Hackers who would like to access your files and personal things in the computer. But if you don’t have an Internet connection then you won’t need one.

What does a firewall do?

Well, a firewall is a program that monitors and logs incoming and outgoing connection to the web. And using it you can also allow and deny programs inside your computer from accessing the web. It also can show you how many times you are being attack by somebody and log the port number of the attackers (In some cases).

What do I need to look for in a Firewall program?

Well, first of all it should be “user friendly” and easy to configure and not so technical. You should be able to actually modify its configurations; this is the same issue that I had with the two-firewall programs that I downloaded from the Internet firewall one had the user-friendly aspect well worked out but firewall two did an awesome job on doing the protection aspect than that of firewall one, but firewall two didn’t quite have the user friendly and cute interface worked out. And you might want to look for a function that “tests” your firewall’s protection this is done by running an actual penetration test in it (this function’s purpose is really hard to explain but this can be a useful tool to use…).

NOTE:

Remember, the functionality of the firewall can only be defined by you, well you are the one whose going to use the firewall isn’t it? You should also read reviews about the softwares that you’re planning to buy first so that if there were some down sides to it you’d be able to weigh all of this against its competitors.

Go to chartrooms, ask what softwares they’d recommend for you to purchase, trust me they’d be more than happy to help you there.

A hi-jacker my friend is a third party program that “hi-jacks” your browser’s homepage and replaces it with another one with out your own permission this one’s are the most annoying ones.

Where do I get these removers?

You can download then through the mighty web for free just google them up… but if you prefer the commercial ones them you can download them too through the Internet.

Note:

This software is like an anti-virus too, you should also update this program’s definitions so that if a new spyware arrives you program will easily recognize it and delete it right after you scan your hard drive.

“How to make your Personal computer a lot more safer”

There are many ways on how to make a home computer safer from viruses and hackers, and it all actually boils down to how much you are willing to spend or invest in you precious computer.

First, you must have an anti-virus program.

What’s an anti-virus?

Basically an anti-virus is a program that scans all of your files and programs and

Looks for a virus threats in your hard drives. These programs can be updated regularly. They usually have what they call “Virus Definitions” that should be updated.

What’s a virus definition?

The virus definition is one of the most important part of an anti-virus. This is the file with which your Anti-virus depends upon when scanning your hard drive for viruses. It’s like a cartographic sketch of a criminal that the police officers rely on to recognize them, and eventually catch them.

Where can I get an anti-virus?

Well, right now there are many places in the web where you can download an anti-virus. You can start searching at Yahoo, Google and Ask Jeeves, there you can choose from a large variety of software vendors i.e. Symantec, Mac afee and many more. Or you can opt to go the nearest computer shop to buy one.

Do I really need to buy one?

The answer is yes and no, yes because you might need a better type of virus protection that most likely the commercial anti-virus have, features like a more comprehensive log of viruses. This is most likely the best choice if you want more control in your computer’s activities. And no because you can get FREE anti-viruses, one that I could give to you is AVG free edition; it’s a decent program with most likely one of the best virus definitions there is (that is in my opinion…). You can get it at www.grisoft.com and if you would like to upgrade your AVG into the pro edition you can easily do that too.

Pro. Or Home?

Now, this question can only answered by the user himself, because as I have said earlier it boils down to your own needs and your budget. Most of the time the Professional Editions are more expensive mainly because they have more functions than that of a Home Edition. If you are only planning to buy one for a home pc then you can buy the Home edition. Same goes to other editions of anti-viruses. Just always remember that you first need to know your needs in buying this softwares, because if not you might be just throwing your money for an over kill anti-virus. And most likely you won’t be able to use all of the functions of the Pro. Edition if you’re just an ordinary home person.

What should I look for?

First you should look for a software that have has an update function, for your virus definition (refer to the earlier paragraphs for the meaning and use of this). Then for outlook users you might want to look for an e-mail scanner function, this basically scans your incoming and outgoing e-mails for viruses. And then look for the expiration dates, some of the anti-virus programs has their expiration dates. And you might need to renew your license at least once a year. I think Norton has this kind of thing. One more function you might want to have is ”Quarantine” functionality because with this function you’d have an option to just quarantine the infected file and just deal with it later or if the file that got infected was important you would not accidentally delete it. As far as I know these are the most basic functions that you should look for.

I have an anti-virus that is outdated should I update it or just buy a newer one?

It all depends on your preferences, I have once run a Norton 4.0 in my computer when my computer accidentally uninstalled my 2004 version and could not re-install it because my installer was missing. So, I got to take the risk of running a 4.0 version in it though it was outdated it protected my pc very well, and the only thing I did was to update it regularly. Though Norton 4.0 did not have those more advanced functions it worked for me. I think you should buy a newer version if you’d like to have the more advanced function that the newer ones have.

Is it true that anti-viruses slow the Computer down?

Some of them do slow the computer specially if it has lower memory and has a slower processor and only meets the minimum system requirements for the anti-virus. One detail that you should also look at is the minimum system requirements of your PC. Because if you over-looked this one then you’ll have a bit of a problem on the performance of you PC.

One more thing it is not always true that the more expensive the anti-virus is, the more effective it will be and one more! check the user-friendliness of the programs.
